Determination of Acute Toxicity of Urea to Eisenia Fetida by a Simple Paper Contact Method

چکیده

Urea is the most commonly used nitrogen fertilizer worldwide. The overused urea in agricultural fields may affect the soil organisms especially, the earthworms which are known well for their role in soil fertility. Earthworms are typically inferred as soil indicators without which soil fertility cannot be measured directly. An acute toxicity test of urea to earthworm (Eisenia fetida) was performed using a simple paper contact method proposed by OECD (Organization for Economical Cooperation and Development) testing guideline no. 207. This is a simple screening test to identify the toxic potential of the chemical to earthworm. The lethal concentration was recorded as 28μg/cm 2 . Based on the resulting LC50 value, urea was categorized as “very toxic” to earthworm according to Roberts and Dorough (1984). The result of this study demonstrates that inorganic fertilizers can also be toxic to earthworms when contacted directly. Thus there arises an unavoidable need for monitoring the usage of fertilizer dosage on agricultural lands, particularly the urea.

Comparative acute toxicity of twenty-four insecticides to earthworm, Eisenia fetida.

In this study, we used two different types of bioassay, a contact filter paper toxicity bioassay and a soil toxicity bioassay, to compare the acute toxicity of twenty-four insecticides belonging to six chemical categories on earthworm species, Eisenia fetida. Results of the contact filter paper toxicity bioassay indicated that neonicotinoids were super toxic to E. fetida (48 h-LC(50) value rang...

Ecotoxicity of Sodium Arsenite on Eisenia Fetida

In this study, we performed ecotoxicity tests of sodium arsenite on soil invertebrate Eisenia fetida. Initially, broad range of sodium arsenite (0.1, 1, 10, 100mg/ml) was tested for mortality of E. fetida after 24 hours in filter paper test. The narrow range doses (0-1mg/ml) were further tested to determine the EC50 and LD50. The EC50 dose of sodium arsenite was considered at which 50% of earth...

Biochemical and genotoxic effect of triclosan on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) using contact and soil tests.

Triclosan (TCS) is a broad-spectrum bactericide that is used for a variety of antimicrobial functions. TCS is frequently detected in the terrestrial environment due to application of sewage sludge to agricultural land. In the present study, 48-h paper contact and 28-day spiked soil tests were conducted to examine the toxic effects of TCS on the antioxidative and genetic indices of earthworms (E...

Short Communication AVOIDANCE, WEIGHT LOSS, AND COCOON PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT FOR EISENIA FETIDA EXPOSED TO C60 IN SOIL

Eisenia fetida was used as a model terrestrial organism to assess the potential ecotoxicity of molecular pristine C60 in soil. Reproduction (assessed by counting cocoon numbers) was hindered only at very high C60 concentrations (5% by weight), and C60 (up to 1%) was not avoided and did not hinder earthworm growth. This suggests that E. fetida is unlikely to experience acute toxicity as a result...

Effects of variations of the organic matter content and pH of soils on the availability and toxicity of zinc to the earthworm Eisenia fetida

Nine toxicity tests were conducted using a procedure based on the OECD (1984) artificial soil earthworm toxicity test. For each test, Eisenia jet ida were exposed to zinc in a range of artificial soils with differing pH and/or organic matter (0 M) content. Earthworm survival and cocoon production, and the concentrations of zinc in two fractions (nitric acid extractable, water extractable) and t...
